Got Questions?: The Second Coming

November 19, 2024

As we wrap up our “Got Questions?” series, we tackle one of Christian theology's most debated and fascinating topics: the Second Coming of Christ. In this week’s sermon, we’ll dive into the powerful imagery of Revelation 20:1-6, exploring what Scripture reveals about the ultimate defeat of evil, the reign of Christ, and the call of the Church.

Revelation 20 paints a dramatic picture of Satan’s final defeat—bound in chains and thrown into the bottomless pit, unable to deceive the nations until his release at the end of a thousand years. This passage raises a host of questions that Christians have pondered for centuries: What is the meaning of the "1,000 years"? When will Jesus return? How does the Second Coming relate to the resurrection of the dead and final judgment? How should these truths inform and affect how I live as a Christian now?

In this week’s sermon, we’ll explore these questions, addressing the four main perspectives on the end times: PremillennialismAmillennialism, Post-millennialism, and Dispensationalism. From the early church's expectation of a literal, physical reign of Christ on Earth to the more symbolic interpretations that view the "millennium" as the current reign of Christ in Heaven and on Earth, there is much to consider.

But beyond the theological debates, what really matters? We will focus on three key truths we can all agree on:

  1. Jesus is returning—and it will be a real, physical return. (John 14:3, Acts 1:11)
  2. There will be a resurrection of the dead and a final judgment (1 Cor 15:51-52, John 5:28-29).
  3. We don’t know when it will happen—but we are called to live in readiness. (Matthew 24:36)

As we unpack these truths, we'll emphasize how this should shape our lives today: how we live out the mission of evangelism, pursue holiness, and remain good stewards of what God has entrusted to us in light of Christ’s return.

So, what does the promise of Christ’s return mean for us? How does this shape our view of the world, our mission in it, and our hope for the future? Watch this week's sermon for a deeper dive into the hope and urgency that comes with the truth of the Second Coming. You can follow along with this week’s sermon notes here.
