A Gospel Punch to the Face

Isn’t it interesting how God works in the hearts of His people? Sometimes it’s a gentle whisper or a slow, consistent nudge; while others it’s as though He takes off the proverbial gloves because we need to be knocked in the head –a good old Gospel punch to the face. This week’s sermon, from guest speaker Mike Edwards, takes us to Galatians 1:3-12 where we can see that Paul was sent to deliver a Gospel punch to God’s people there.

Paul basically begins, “I’m not mad, I’m just disappointed…” Ouch! He goes on to say that if they continue to reject the Gospel, they’ll be under God’s curse. To be sure he’s understood, he repeats it.

I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting him who called you in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel— 7 not that there is another one, but there are some who trouble you and want to distort the gospel of Christ. Galatians 1:6-7

We are up against a host of “other gospels” –like the “get out of jail free,” “gimme-gimme,” and “good for you” gospels. The Galatians were falling for the “Jesus +” gospel, instead of following and teaching “Christ and Christ alone.” As with money, the best way to spot a counterfeit is by thoroughly and confidently knowing the real thing.

So, what is the Gospel? Why are we prone to leaving or distorting it so quickly? What can we do to live in line with the Gospel? Watch this week’s message from Redemption Church for answers and encouragement. We can’t always see the Gospel working in our current circumstances or when we try to lean into the future, but we can always look back and see God’s hand at work and His faithfulness when we trust Him and the unadulterated truth of His Word.
