More Than Conquerors

Doesn’t it seem like the enemy has gone into hyperdrive? More than ever in recent history, Christians are facing hardship and hostility –even from our friends and families. Diseases like COVID and rumors of monkeypox, dramatic political upheaval with a looming election, wars and rumors of war around the globe, countless distractions that focus our eyes on self, and economic stress and instability are just some of the “things” Paul refers to in Romans 8:37,

“No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.”

It is so easy to get caught up in our circumstances and fall under the weight of stress and despair, but Paul says, NO, STOP; we don’t just win; we are MORE than winners in Christ, and our enemy will be overwhelmingly defeated!

Consider Paul’s contemporary audience. Early believers were persecuted horribly throughout Rome until the start of the 4th century. They faced the loss of legal rights, seizure of property, destruction of meeting places, and even death. Historians estimate that 3,000–3,500 Christians were executed from 303–305 AD alone. Despite the odds, the Church continued to persist and grow. Paul certainly knew about “these things” we would face, and he wanted to encourage us all to cling to the promise that we are “more than conquerors.”

What does it mean to be more than a conqueror –by definition, logically and realistically? How does God reverse near-certain outcomes for His glory and our good? How can we apply this promise to our lives and testimonies? Watch this week’s sermon to understand better and live in the victory and freedom that Romans 8:37 offers us.
