The Promise

Romans 8:20 reminds us that our world has been “subjected to futility,” and don’t we know it?! We are reminded in almost every direction that we look (including in the mirror). Futility implies something warped, perverse, sickly, weak, or false. It began when sin entered into the world and it will continue until Christ returns –to restore and glorify His children and Creation. 

Last week we learned about the hope and help the Holy Spirit provides when we are too weak, confused, or limited to know what to pray or how to best pray. This week, Redemption Church continues in the Romans 8 series to tackle one of the most beloved Scripture passages of all time, found in 8:28-30. 

Are you feeling the weight of that futility? Do you find yourself trying to compensate for it –figuring out all of the ways that you can make everything in your life fit together perfectly, how to create order in the chaos? Guess what, we don’t have to do any of that because of the promise that is laid out for us here. What a promise, let’s look:

"And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. 29 For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. 30 And those whom he predestined he also called, and those whom he called he also justified, and those whom he justified he also glorified.”  Romans 8:28-30 

Think about that for a moment… 

He doesn’t say, “And we hope that…” or “And we guess that…” NO! Paul is clear that, as believers, we can KNOW that ALL things work together for GOOD. Wow! What an impact it would have for the Kingdom if we truly understood, believed, and then walked out the truth of this powerful passage.

So, what does it “good” really mean here? How can we practically lean into and walk out the truth of this promise? What impact can it have on our spiritual growth, witness, and prayer life?
